Holiday Travel Tips Before You Hit the Road

November 29, 2016Shawn CasadevallBlogNo comments

headlight restoreThe holiday season is here, which for many people means long road trips to see their families and loved ones. However, the weather conditions and traffic can make for dangerous driving during this time of year. If you plan to travel by car during the holidays, here are some ways you can make the ride a lot smoother by planning ahead.

  • Plan for Daylight. The days are short and the nights are long in many parts of the country this time of year, which means that you need to plan ahead if you want to get where you’re going before sundown. Don’t assume that less traffic means safer roads at night; though it’s true that there tends to be 60% fewer cars driving at night, it’s also when more than 40% of all fatal vehicle accidents occur. Plan out your route and stops ahead of time as much as you are able.
  • Headlight Restore. Especially if you plan to do any driving at night or through snowy conditions, your headlights are going to be your most important road ally. Invest in a headlight renewal kit that will let you perform a DIY headlight restoration for safer driving and better visibility at night. You might not even realize how badly you need a headlight restorer until you see the difference yourself. Plus, these headlight restoration kits make great stocking stuffers.
  • Emergency Kit. If you don’t have one stashed in your vehicle already, put together a simple emergency kit to keep in your car at all times. This should include a blanket for every passenger, extra warm clothes, a flashlight, first aid supplies, and some food. You never know when you might find yourself in a bind. While you’re preparing your travel emergency kit, double check and make sure you have a spare tire and jack in the trunk, too.
  • Relax. Holiday traffic can produce a lot of road rage, but there’s no need to get caught up in the hype. Make sure you bring along items to help you relax, whether it’s a few of your favorite CDs, your favorite podcast, a calming scent, or a good friend to talk with as you drive.

The holidays can be stressful enough without having to worry about the safety of your drive. Make sure to plan ahead and have your vehicle ready to get you where you need to be in time for all of the merriment and cheer.
